’A unique rural escape set within the spectacular landscape of the South Shropshire hills’_Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Henley Cottage is located on the historic country estate of Acton Scott providing an idyllic setting for holidays and recreation. Enjoying a landscape largely unchanged for two centuries, this privately owned estate today consists of a number of small farmsteads, stone and timber framed cottages, ancient woodland and rolling pasture, amounting to some 1,200 acres.
Henley Cottage is an authentic Victorian farm labourer’s dwelling (one of a pair), which has been carefully restored to retain its original 19th century condition, and is to be featured in a BBC television series filmed at Acton Scott in 2008. Holiday visitors to Henley Cottage will have the opportunity to enjoy its simple and homely atmosphere and the unique experience of Victorian country living. It offers a real escape from 21st century life.
Upon arrival, guests are given detailed instructions on how to use the Cottage’s domestic bygones. It is lit by candlelight and oil lamps, with fresh water pumped from a well, a fireside hip bath for bathing, and all food cooked on a working Victorian coal-fired kitchen range. Henley Cottage has original quarry tile and oak floors, mullion windows, lime plastered walls and beds with traditional linen sheets, wool blankets and huckaback linen towels. Whilst the original earth closet at the end of the garden is in working order, the one concession to the 21st century is a modern W.C. and shower room in an outhouse!
Entrance porch. Scullery with earthenware sink, larder slab and stone flag floor. Kitchen/parlour with coal-fired cast iron range, quarry tile floor and beamed ceiling. Narrow stairs to first floor: Double bedroom with brass/iron bed, oak floor, beamed ceiling and coal fire grate. Narrow steep open tread stairs to second floor: Landing with oak floor, sloping ceiling and single bed (for +1). The Shooting Lodge, sleeping 8 + 3, reference RNP, and Henley Farmhouse, sleeping 20, reference RJJ3, are spacious properties which have been finely restored to offer every modern day convenience. Like Henley Cottage, they enjoy picturesque locations with uninterrupted views across open parkland, towards Wenlock Edge and Flanders Folly. The three properties may be rented individually or together to accommodate the needs of larger parties.
Henley Cottage, The Shooting Lodge and Henley Farmhouse provide the perfect base from which to explore the Acton Scott Estate and local countryside and towns, with their many and varied attractions, suitable for all ages. This includes Acton Scott’s Historic Working Farm set within the 18th-century Home Farm buildings. A favourite family visitor attraction, it stocks rare and traditional breeds of farm animal, whilst the land around is worked with shire horses to demonstrate the farming practices of 1900 and together with The School House Café, it is open to the public from April to October. There are also many footpaths and bridleways on the Estate offering varied walks providing landscape views, historic features and wildlife.Further afield are the medieval market towns of Ludlow and Shrewsbury, both with fine castles and a wealth of period architecture, in addition to theatres, cinemas, excellent restaurants, traditional country pubs, antiques and good shopping. In addition to walking in the spectacular Stretton Hills and Welsh Marches, sports centre facilities, including swimming and tennis, horse riding and golf courses are all close at hand. Locally produced foods may be found at neighbouring farm shops, or delivered direct by arrangement to Acton Scott’s holiday houses, and catering can be organised. Amongst the many National Trust and English Heritage managed country houses and historic sites within easy reach are Attingham Park, Berrington Hall, Ironbridge, the castles of Powis and Stokesay, Wenlock Abbey and Wroxeter Roman city._

Lighting by oil lamps supplied by owner - oil incl

Wood-burning stove - fuel incl

Victorian coal grate - fuel incl

Solid fuel range - fuel incl

Parking (3 cars)

Shops 2 miles

Enclosed cottage-style garden with lawn and vegetable patch

Water supplied via cast iron outside pump

Thursday to Thursday

....
